On behalf of the National People’s Power and the people of Sri Lanka, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the people and the government of Iran on the occasion of the sudden demise of the Iranian President, H.E. Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other esteemed statesmen who tragically lost their lives in the fatal helicopter accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the departed, as well as the entire nation of Iran during this difficult time.

President Ebrahim Raisi’s demise is an irreversible loss not only to the people of Iran and the Middle East but also to the global community. President Raisi tirelessly worked to strengthen friendly and non-hegemonic relations with numerous countries, including Sri Lanka. His recent visit to Sri Lanka to inaugurate a hydropower project, funded by the Iranian people, stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to international cooperation and sustainable development. Furthermore, his final trip to Azerbaijan to inaugurate a similar project underscores his steadfast dedication to fostering regional collaboration and promoting mutual prosperity.

We of the National People’s Power are confident that his legacy of fostering cooperation, development, and friendly relations will undoubtedly inspire the Iranian people to carry forward his mission, ensuring continued progress and stability both within Iran and throughout the Middle East.

Our deepest solidarity is with the people of Iran during this tragic moment.

Meeting of the Colombo District Doctors of the National Scholars Organization held at the Colombo Foundation Institute

Assistant Secretary of the United States, responsible for the South and Central Asian Region, Donald Lu, convened with representatives of the National People’s Power (NPP) yesterday at the Galle Face Hotel in Sri Lanka. The discussion, attended by U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Ms. Julie Chung, focused on pertinent issues concerning both parties.

Present from the NPP were its National Executive Members, namely Mr. Vijitha Herath, Member of Parliament, Mr. Wasantha Samarasinghe, and Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. The meeting addressed a range of topics, notably the current economic climate in Sri Lanka, the involvement of the International Monetary Fund, ensuring the integrity of electoral processes, and security dynamics within the Indian Ocean region.

A meeting between Mr. Ben Mellor, the Indo-Pacific Regional Director of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and Comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power (Jathika Jana Balavegaya) was held today (06th) afternoon at JVP Head Office.

For this meeting, Ms. Humaira Hatia, Head of Sri Lanka at UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and Mr. Andrew Patrick, the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Tom Soper, the First Secretary, and Comrade Vijitha Herath, National Executive Committee Member of NPP were also present.

The current economic and political situation in Sri Lanka, regional geopolitical challenges and cooperation between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka were discussed at length.

A meeting between the Norway Ambassador for Sri Lanka HE May-Elin Stener, and the leader of the National People’s Power, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, was held on 2nd May at the J.V.P. Head Office.

Also present at the meeting were the second secretary of the Norwegian Embassy, Mr. John Bjerkem, the National Executive Committee Member, of the National People’s Power, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and the National Executive Committee Member, Vijitha Herath.

During the meeting, both sides engaged in extensive discussions about the economic crisis currently facing Sri Lanka and the prevailing political situation in the country. Attention was also given to the ongoing developments concerning the national issue and the upcoming elections scheduled for this year. The ambassador emphasized the Norwegian government’s commitment to assisting Sri Lanka and highlighted the importance of strengthening relations between the two countries. This meeting marked the first official interaction since her arrival in Sri Lanka.
