The UNP has no ability to become the real opposition to the present government, but the NPP is prepared to fulfil the task of the opposition says the Kalutara District JVP Parliamentarian Dr Nalinda Jayatissa.
Speaking at an event held in Kalutara recently Dr Jayatissa said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has 1825 days to rule the country. He said, “As a far-seeing president, he should not allow those who have made a big noise to dictate him nor be allowed to be misled by wrong advice from those narrow-minded miscreants who would surround him for power. His responsibility is to become the president who has won the trust of all at the end of five years.
All we see about the UNP is that they have fallen to their usual power struggle. At the election, 5.5 million people voted for Mr Sajith Premadasa. However, he has blamed, especially people in Hambantota for not voting for him despite distributing various goods among them. His responsibility is not running away from these people. They trusted him, especially the Tamil and Muslim masses who voted for him. However, he has turned his back to them. This is not leadership quality.
The UNP, Messrs Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa cannot become the real opposition to the present government. All this time they have struggled to get the party leadership, to become the leader of the opposition and to become the candidate of the party only.
Hence, we tell the people in this country that having any hope for the UNP that is splintering and deteriorating to do well at the forthcoming general election is futile. What is necessary for the country is a strong opposition that could direct effective criticism against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government and get benefits to the people and the country. NPP is prepared to fulfil the task of strong opposition.”
