The conference began at 10:00 a.m. today (02) at the P. D. Sirisena Grounds in Maligawatta, Colombo. Approximately 15,000 teachers from across the country attended the conference, which was held under the theme ‘A Renaissance – A New Era – A Teachers’ Power: The Grand National Teachers’ Conference’.
Addressing the conference, Mr Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power, stated that he and the National People’s Power would allocate more than 4% of the budget to education upon coming to power, with a stage-by-stage implementation that will begin in the first budget. He further emphasized that the history of education in this country dates back to the arrival of Mihindu Thero and that without the teachers who provided maternal and paternal love to the children, he would not be where he is today.
National Executive Member of National People’s Power, President of Trade Union Federation K.D. Lalkantha, Vishaka Abeyratne, Vice President of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union, and Mahinda Jayasinghe, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union also spoke at the conference.
