People of this country chased away the dictator’s rule of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, it was not a resignation he was chased away by a Peoples’ struggle.
People have one the 1st battle but now the responsibility is back in parliament to establish a government in line with people’s demands. As NPP we tried hard to convince other parties of the need to come to a common agreement. The demands of civil societies are very clear, they all demand an interim government with a common understanding. The need was to focus on immediate changes that are required to stabilize the country.
Therefore we proposed the current Speaker to be the president for the next short period and to elect a Prime minster and multi-party cabinet to carry out the agreed tasks and then go for an election as the current parliament does not represent the people’s will, This suggestion is common among most civil organization and the representatives of the Argalaya. However, there was no agreement among the opposition parties, and by Friday few candidates has been declared
Given no one is ready to represent the people’s demands we decided to step up for the occasion, NPP will represent the demands of the people of this county, people are demanding a clear plan and an interim government. We are willing to take up this challenge to lead the interim government to save this country. We will nominate comrade Anura Dissanayake for the presidential election in parliament and like to invite members of parliament and the public to support a common agenda with an interim government to bring this country to stability
